ABU VC Advocates For More Funding For Agricultural Research Institutes

The Vice Chancellor Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Kabiru Bala has called for more funding to agricultural research institutes to accommodate their research needs.

He made the call while commissioning  the IAR 100 years Centenary Monument at the institute yesterday.

Prof. Kabiru Bala said allocating enough funds to agricultural research institutes will help the country in succeeding in its food security programmes.

He recalled that before the discovery of crude oil in Nigeria, it was agriculture that Nigeria depended on in terms of revenue drive.

The Vice Chancellor also said, IAR at 100, has proven its mandate and even beyond, both at home and internationally in the field of agricultural research and development.

Prof. Bala has also assured the institute of the university’s support in order to maintain its research activities.

On the new mandate given to IAR on cotton and groundnut, the Vice Chancellor said the institute has all the expertise to carry out the assignment.

Other activities included farm visits, where researchers showcased the various improved varieties of crops at the IAR Farm.
