World Bicycle Day: Kaduna Govt Will Partner FRSC In Ensuring Safety On Roads – Commissioner

In view of the importance of the World Bicycle Day and its positive impact on the environment, the Kaduna State Government has vowed to partner the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in ensuring safety on roads for bicycle riders.

The Commissioner of Sports Development, Honourable Idris Samaila Nyam gave the assurance, during the flagging off of awareness ahead the World Bicycle Day, held on June 3 annually, at the Kaduna State Secretariat on Thursday June 2.

 “I want to thank you very much for the support, we will continue to work in partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps, in delivering safety issues wether by road or by cycling. 

“Today is an important day that we decided to come together to commemorate the world cycling day. It is a day driven by the UN and the world at large,” he said.

According to him, the day is important for several reasons, including the healthy aspect of bicycle riding.

“It is significant  for us such that one, cycling is a sport for leisure, health and business.

“You have world associations that come in and make so much more from sports.

“We are talking about health perspective and safety. Around the world today, we have people that don’t go around in cars but walk.  They walk for sports, walk for excitement and cycle to areas they want to go to,” he pointed out.

 According to him, in embarking on this mode of exercise, they also realise there is safety or security measures that must be taken to riding along the right side of the road when it comes to crossing the road.

He explained that another significance of bicycle riding is that it emits no carbon to the environment.

” This includes being different from other modes of transportation that come with pollution.

“You have world environmental day, which  is being celebrated, so this comes with a lot of significance,” he said. 

Honourable Nyam explained that, “although the official day is actually tomorrow, we are celebrating it today, because we want to be ahead of the rest of the world”.

In his remarks at the flagging off, 

Zonal Commanding Officer, RS1, Kaduna, ACM Godwin Omiko said that the United Nations World Bicycle Day 2022t has the heme: “Cycling For Earth And Humanity” .

According to him, it would be used in creating awareness and advocating for safety on the roads for bicycle riders.
