Reasons why ladies or women indulge in carrying handbags all over the world is a historical issue that has come to stay, the outfit for women in most cultures have been devoid of pockets. Many women clothing still either have no pockets or the pockets are not functional.
You will agree with me that, pockets were originally invented for men because they travel unlike women who stay back at home. The traditional form of pockets in 17th century Britain were separate mini pouches that were to be tied around the waist.
Many people are of the view that pockets have always been the symbol of power in patriarchal culture. That’s one of the reasons why women were devoid of it.
Lack of functional pockets in women clothing is an instance of patriarchal domination in fashion industry still.
New Nigerian Newspapers went out to get the views of ladies on why they indulged in carrying handbag even as some of the bags carried are empty.
According to Esther John, in her opinion, the main reasons why she carries handbag is that, it’s really hard to find enough pockets in our clothes. Even if there were, carrying too much stuff in pockets is not regraded as elegant.
“Women usually have more things to carry than men do. For example, if a girl wears make-up in the morning, she needs to carry at least lipstick, foundation, tissues to keep it perfect in the evening”, she added.
Also speaking, Emmanuella John said from her own perspective, why ladies uses handbag is to put their personal stuffs in it such as toiletries and other vital items.
According to Stephanie Peter, she said in her own opinion, handbag is not really necessary and important but to some ladies it is a very vital thing.
She went further to say that, handbags mostly add beauty to ladies when going to weddings, churches and any other functions.
