A driver and his motor boy lost their lives and shop and property worth millions of Naira were destroyed as a petrol tanker crashed and exploded at Dan Magaji Fly Over along Zaria – Kano Expressway in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The Unit Commender, Federal Road Safety Commission Zaria, Abdurrahman Yakasai confirmed this to New Nigerian in Zaria on Thursday.

However, Alhaji Maiwada Zariya, Deputy Chairman, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Kaduna State Chapter, said the accident happened at about 6.30am

He added that the driver and his motor boy were yet to be identified but their remains have been deposited at a mortuary.

He said the petrol tanker with registeration number (Jigawa) RNG 065 XA was conveying 45,000 liters of petrol from Lagos to Kano.

He added that due to the ongoing road construction, one lane was closed to traffic and the driver was avoiding a bus driver who made a dangerous overtaking.

“In the process of avoiding the bus driver, he was forced to shoulders of the road and the weight of the petrol forced the tanker to crash.

“In the process, the driver, his motor boy died and one person is critically injured (all yet to be identified)

“We have just lifted the tanker, contrary to what some eyewitnesses were saying it did not fall on anybody as some eyewitnesses were saying,” he said.

A combined team of military, FRSC, Fire Service and other security agencies were seen working to evacuate the burnt petrol tanker and maintain free traffic flow in the area as at time of filing the report
