Kaduna State House of Assembly has directed the state revenue service to take proactive measures against local government tax defaulters.
The Assembly gave the directive through its Committee on Finances when an official of the state revenue service appeared before it for its quarterly briefing.
Speaking during the interaction, the Chairman House Committee on Finance, Alhaji Sani Gimi stressed the need for the service to start using its power on local government councils in order to ensure effective revenue generation.
“If they are not doing well, let’s start setting examples by taking proactive action, because Its disheartening to see a common man paying his revenue and some body is cornering the money using the money for his own personal benefit It’s very disheartening,” he said.
The chairman noted that the service is an engine room that would take government to the promised land, hence the need for it to be serious and active.
“We encourage them to take proactive action to make sure that any money that is collected is remitted to government’s purse.”
Gimi commended the service for its effort on revenue collection.
According to him, the purpose of the meeting was to interact with the members of the revenue service and review its performance of 2017.
And also to rub minds on issues that have to do with revenue collection of federal government establishments, state agencies and local government.
Also, the Executive Chairman Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service, Alhaji Muktar Ahmed appreciated the government for its cooperation and support in the area of tax payment in the state.
Ahmed however appealed to the House to amend some sections of the tax codification law which was passed by the assembly to make the work move smoothly.
He said the services would from know on work the approved budgets document presented to the each local government to achieve the targeted revenue.
