As both the public and private schools in Ogun State resume for 2017/2018 second term, the state’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Modupe Mujota has frowned at the attitude of some schools principals and teachers, for not being alive to their responsibilities.
The Commissioner who expressed this displeasure when she visited Premier Grammar School, Abeokuta, took a swipe at the teachers for allowing the students who were supposed to be in their classrooms receiving lectures to roam about the streets, while a handful of their colleagues in other schools visited, were seen in their classrooms, receiving lectures.
While noting that such unwholesome attitude would no longer be condoned, Mujota said punitive measure would be meted out to erring teachers or school heads found wanting in the discharge of their duties.
She however, applauded schools that have commenced academic work by conducting welcome test on the first day of resumption, calling on parents and guardians to release their children and wards, especially, those in final year class for academic activities.
Also speaking during the visit, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Bayo Adeyemi enjoined the final year students to be focused and prepare well for the forthcoming West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
High point of the visit was the distribution of gifts items to the first five best students in each class during the last Unified Examination.
Schools visited by the Commissioner with some top management staff of the ministry included; Akin Ogunpola Model School, Akinale, Itori Community Grammar School, Itori, Premier Grammar School and Lafenwa High School, Lafenwa, all in Ewekoro and Abeokuta North Local Government Areas of the State.
Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry Alhaji Sefiu Rasheed, while monitoring students’ resumption in Sagamu, Odogbolu and Abeokuta South Local Government Areas of the State has described the welcome test being organized for students on the first day of resumption as a means of preparing them for early academic work in the new term.
Alhaji Rasheed called on principals and teachers yet to settle down for the term’s full academic work, to do so immediately, in order to complete the term’s scheme of work as scheduled, thereby having enough time for revision with the students before the commencement of examinations. He said academic work should not be delayed for students who failed to resume on the first day of resumption.
In their seperate remarks, Principals of Abeokuta Girls Grammar School (AGGS) Senior, Mrs. Abosede Oluwole and her counterpart in the private school, Mrs. Osunfidiya Fehintola, said that attendance since the first day has been encouraging, adding that students had undergone the welcome tests in most of their subjects in the first day while concluding parts have been done with normal class work.
Mrs. Oluwole called on parents whose wards would be sitting for the forthcoming Senior Secondary School Examination (SSCE) to cooperate with school authorities by ensuring that their children have more time for their studies while at home.
