Legislative workers at the Oyo State House of Assembly under the auspices of Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN)  on Monday, embarked on indefinite strike.

Sources said the workers were protesting non implementation of financial autonomy for state legislatures among other demands

The workers on arriving the Oyo State House of Assembly, locked all the gates leading to the  complex amidst series of placards with inscription on  their demands pasted across the complex,

Other demands of the striking workers included the  amendment to the  management law which is in conflict with the welfare of staff and demand for immediate and unconditional assent to the Oyo State House of Assembly Service Commission bill as passed by the state Assembly in 2023.

Chairman of Oyo State Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Mr. Yemi Alade in a chat with journalists, said the strike will be indefinite.

The chairman said the blocking of gates to the House of Assembly will continue until their demands are met.

Mr. Alade stressed that the PASAN members are seeking for implementation of financial autonomy for state legislatures, and that Governor Seyi Makinde should comply with section 121 (3a, 3b and 4a) of the 1999 constitution (as altered).

He noted  that legislative staff are yet to see the results of what was  promised the workers during a meeting with the governor’s forum on the PASAN agitations as well as that of the Chairman, Conference, Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin at the weekend.

According to sources, the protesting legislative workers are among others, calling for implementation of the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structures (CONLESS) for staff of the Assembly and commission as well as full implementation of the salary structures with other legislative allowances at 100 percent.

New Nigerian gathered that the strike by the legislative staff in Oyo State followed the expiration of the ultimatum of the national body of PASAN as well as the peculiar agitations of the state chapter of the union.
