Killing Of Four In Akwa Ibom Cult War, Police Arrests 65 Suspects

No fewer than 65 suspects have been arrested by the police in connection with the fracas between two rivalry cult groups that led to killing of four persons in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Monday.

SP Odiko Macdon, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in his update on the bloody incident, stated that proper investigation would be carried on the 65 persons arrested.

Macdon added that those found culpable would be charged to court, while the innocent ones would be released.

“A total of 65 persons have been arrested. A proper screening will be done. Those found culpable will be charged to court, while those not connected to the crisis will be let go.” He stated.

Meanwhile, some of the suspects according to SP Macdon have given useful information to the police.

The command urged residents to remain vigilant and go about their normal businesses as normalcy has been restored.

It would be recalled that on Tuesday, police confirmed that four persons were killed during the cult clash at Use Offot and Anua Offot villages on Nwaniba Road axis of Uyo metropolis which occured previous night.

The deadly fight which had some conflicted roots cause was between the Red Heart and Lions confertanity, forced motorists and other passerbys around the two hot zones to scraper for safety while shops owners shut down for hours until the intervention by the detachment of armed policemen.

While some people attributed its cause to misunderstanding that ensured among the illegal levy collectors from commercial buses and cab operators patronizing illegal parks in Uyo metropolis, others said it started from an argument at BetNija spot Centre over betting.

However, the police were yet to make public the names of the two cult groups involved and the roots cause of the incident.

Recall few years ago, the police had issued a statement where over 30 cult groups were identified and consequently banned thier operations in the state.

Despite the fact that during the incident, some hideouts were traced and destroyed, while suspects were arrested by the police and charged to Court yet cultists and their activities still hold sway in many parts of the state.
