In its efforts to curtail the rising issues affecting women and girls in the society, the African Women in Media (AWiM) has launched its Reporting Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWGs) project.
Co-founder and CEO, AWiM, Dr. Yemisi Akinbobola, in statement, said that the VAWGs project will focus on dealing with women-related issues ranging from sexual violence to domestic violence, violence against women induced by insecurity, and even violence against women journalists.
According to her, the VAWGs project will build the capacity of 75 women journalists across the five states, develop a gender policy framework and media toolkit for newsrooms, and commission investigative stories.
The project which will last for three years seeks to intervene in the current state of reporting stories of violence against women and girls in Nigeria, focusing on Borno, Edo, Ekiti, Ondo and Plateau states.
The AWiM Co-founder lamented that Violence Against Women and Girls continues to be a big social issue globally. She however added that “though this intervention with media and journalists, we contribute our part to creating enabling environments for improved media reporting on this issue in Nigeria.”
“The cohort of trained journalists will form a community of practice for ethical and gender-conscious reporting on VAWG. They will have the opportunity to pitch and produce a long-form investigative story”, Akinbobola added.
AWiM called on female journalists living or working in Borno, Edo, Ekiti, Ondo and Plateau states to apply in order to be selected as one of the 75 trainees for this programme.
They said that qualified candidates can apply at their website
