By; Tina Phineas, Yola.
Men and officers of the Nigerian Customs Services have been warned that the era of godfatherism and nepotism are over as only hard work and patriotism will be recognized in the service.
The Comptroller General of Nigerian Customs Services, Hamid Ibrahim Ali gave this warning when addressing men and officers of the Adamawa/Taraba Area command of the service in Yola during his familiarization tour in the state.
According to him, discipline will no longer be compromised henceforth, insisting that attitudinal change would be adopted to save the battered image of the service before the public.
“Indiscipline, corruption, bribery and other vices would be seriously punished and drug addicts, kidnappers and armed robbers would be fished out from the system” he maintained.
Ali noted that the failure of the system to conduct background checks before recruitment was responsible for employing all manner of criminals in the system with its attendant consequences.
The CG stated further that unlike in the past where background checks are conducted to verify the character of those to be employed, corruption and indiscipline has bastardized the process leading to the problems the service is contending with.
He noted that promotion in the service would henceforth be based on hard work, which must be acknowledged by the supervisor of employees unit noting that “survival in the Nigerian Customs Service would be through performance.
He maintained that the NCS is seriously reviewing its laws to meet the dynamics of modern day customs operations and to curb leakages and wastages from the system.
The CG promised the officers of better working environment provided that they would tighten their belts to improve revenue generation noting that with the free fall of oil prices, the NCS would have to do much to compliment the revenue drive of the government.
Decrying the welfare of the officers, Ali promised to look into accommodation and other vital infrastructure of the employees with a view to boosting their morale.
He noted that henceforth, the service would make sure that transparency, integrity and honesty are its watch word noting that any officer that does not inculcate such values, would be shown the way out of the services
He enjoined staff to embrace sporting activities in order to boost their physical and mental well being as he said such qualities are vital to men and officers in the conduct of their duties.
Our correspondent in Yola reports that the Comptroller General visited Belel boarder in Maiha local government area of the state earlier where he also addressed men and officers manning the boarder to be dedicated and honest in their official responsibilities
.He also encourage the men and officers of the service to exhibited high sense of commitment and professionalism in the revenue generation drive so as to enable the federal government provide projects that have direct bearing on the populace.
