Ebonyi Community Celebrates New Yam Festival In Grandstyle

They people of Nguzu Edda in Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have celebrated and showcased their  New Yam Festival in a symbolic way as they trooped out in large numbers for the festival.

The event which took place at Nguzu Edda witnessed large turnout of villagers who came to display their customs and traditions in a unique way as both the young and old appeared in their cultural attires.

Earlier in the morning, the elderly men and young ones participated in one of their traditions popularly known as “Igba Nzzu” and other rituals carried out to make the day colorful.

Many masquerades were seen dancing on the road, while women cultural groups were also seen on the field showing their unique cultural heritage.

In an interview with some of the villagers, Mr.Kalu Ukpa Enya said that the New Yam Festival is being celebrated by the 72 villages that make up Nguzu Edda  in Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, adding that it is a special season which gives them the opportunity to meet with old friends and well wishers.

Also, Mr. Chimaobi Ugwuocha noted that the New Yam Festival is so special because it brings peace and unity to the entire community, saying that both the traditionalist and Christians do celebrate the festival together, since it brings unity and oneness amongst them.

On his part, the chairman of Nguzu Edda General Assembly, Chief Okoro Agwu  stated that the New Yam Festival  affords them the opportunity to commune with the gods of the land and also to celebrate their unique cultural identity.

The New Yam Festival featured various cultural dances by men and women; Igbu Nzzu ritual, display of masquerades, among others.
