The Students Wing of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has joined a host of others in condemning what it described as  the arrest and continued unlawful detention of Aminu Adamu.

CNG Students Wing expressed this in a statement signed by its  Secretary General, Iskil Abubakar, made available to newsmen in Kaduna on  November 30, 2022.

“The Students Wing of the Coalition of Northern Groups, (CNG) wishes to join all concerned Nigerians in condemning in its totality the impunity with which Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari ordered the unlawful arrest and perpetual detention without trial of a fellow student  of the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, Aminu Adamu.

“CNG finds the action of Lady Aisha Buhari and the Department of State Services (DSS) over the arrest of a young Nigerian for merely passing a remark on Twitter very disturbing,” it said.

The group argued that, ” By whatever Lingua Franca, the action of the First Lady smacks of gross abuse of power, insensitivity to the plight of the Nigerian students and therefore unwarranted and unacceptable.

“It is unfortunate that since early November 2022, the undergraduate tweeted had remained in the custody of the state without recourse to due process of law, for merely exercising his fundamental right of expression by Tweeting “Su mama anchi kudin talakawa ankoshi” (the mother has grown fat feeding on masses’ money).

“Here is a government that could not contain an eight-month strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that kept millions of Nigerian students out of school, going about arresting students for no just course, instead of pacifying them.

“We demand the immediate and unconditional release of our fellow student and condemn the action of the First Lady as petty, ridiculous and unconstitutional,” it said.

The group said that no one disputes the right of the First Lady to seek redress in the court of law if she so wishes, but no sane Nigerian will accept such level of impunity as displayed by Mrs Aisha Buhari in using the secret police to detain a youth and force him out of school.

“We find it unacceptable for any official or members of privileged families to deploy state apparatus in such a draconian and oppressive manner the way Mrs Aisha Buhari has done to settle personal scores,”  the statement concluded.
