Issues arising from high risk pregnancies can be prevented through child spacing.
An expert, Professor Hadiza Galadanchi expressed this when.delivering a lecture on day-two of the  three-day training for media practitioners in Nigeria, organised by Rotary Action Group for Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health which began on Tuesday March 1, 2022.
“Child spacing addresses high risk pregnancy. High risk pregnancies are, too early: (Eclampsia, pre-eclampsia, obstructed labour, VVF),  Too frequent: (Anaemia, malnutrition, child mortality, postpartum haemorrhage),  Too many: (Ruptured uterus, postpartum haemorrhage) and Too late: (Hypertension, diabetis, cardiac disease),” she said.
According to her, one of the must effective strategy for addressing the challenges of maternal morbidity and mortality is family planning/child spacing.
She however, lamented that as it stands NIgeria’s Contraceptive Prevalence Ratio (CPR), has remained stagnant for several decades
“It is a hanging fruit CPR 17% which is one of the lowest around the world,” she said.
She regretted that NIgeria has not achieved improvement in curbing maternal mortality.
“Something drastic has to be done to bring changes.
“We have unmet needs from women who want contraceptives but can’t get it.
“Unmet need is real, we did a study across NIgeria. Almost 30 per cent in Lagos using traditional method of family planning,” she added.
