*Tasks judiciary to salvage nation’s democracy

By; AMOS TAUNA, Kaduna

he Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has expressed dismay with utterances of spokespersons of political parties.

The forum therefore, called on party leaders to immediately intervene  and restrain them from using unhealthy  language and exchanges that could be detrimental and heat up the polity.

Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the forum’s Director of Publicity and Advocacy in a statement, explained that the forum has followed the conduct of the elections, some of which are still being planned or conducted and expressed reservations over utterances of party spokespersons, describing it as not healthy to the development of democracy in Nigeria.

He said, “The forum is, however, concerned over rhetoric and exchanges, which raise tensions and fuel negative dispositions that threaten inter-community relations. Party leaders should restrain spokespersons from escalating damaging language and exchanges.”

He then appealed to Nigerians to allow the judiciary to undertake its onerous responsibility in a calm and peaceful atmosphere in order to get a head way to the development of democracy in the country.

He expressed displeasure that leaders are not exercising enough responsibility to encourage respect for the judicial process that is a key element of the electoral process.

The Director of Publicity and Advocacy reminded the judiciary that Nigerians look up to it to salvage democracy and restore the faith of Nigerians in its integrity and competence as it looks forward to having leadership that will give a sense of direction in the country.
