A new leadership of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) was on Thursday, inaugurated in Kaduna, with Comrade Anidi Samuel sworn-in as the National President.

Calling on the students to be mindful of the dangers of drugs abuse among them, the Director-General, Kaduna State Bureau for Substance Abuse, Prevention and Treatment (KADBUSA), Dr Joseph Maigari, observed that hands must be on deck towards finding an immediate solution to the increasing cases of drugs abuse among youths in the country.

He noted that most youth have fallen victims of the consequences of drugs abuse, thereby seriously affecting the future of the country.

Speaking at the inauguration of the new leadership of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) in Kaduna, Dr Maigari stated that the situation of drugs abuse among the youths is so alarming and does give a bright future to the next generation.

“You discover that most homes are lamenting the adverse effects of drugs abuse among their children. It has not only affected the victims but also their parents and loved ones are completely disorganized following the behaviour of those affected,” he explained.

He noted that the Kaduna State Government through agencies are doing all they could do through different measures put in place to curb the menace among the youths especially students by diverting their attention to their studies as means to discourage them falling victims of drugs abuse.

Also speaking on the topic, “Role of student leaders in curbing illicit drugs in tertiary institutions”, Mr Malo Elisha Bitrus, an Immigration personnel enjoined student leaders to raise to the occasion of check mating their colleagues against taking drugs through sensitization.

He also called on management of higher institutions to explore ways of checking students engaging in drugs abuse with a view of ensuring proper dialogue for them to abstain from such way of life in order to live a meaningful future life.

The ceremony also witnessed the swearing in of other leaders to lead the affairs of polytechnic students in the country.
