The Management of Nestle PLC has disclosed that they are working with partners in the food system in order to advance regenerative farming practices.
Partners working with Nestle include the company’s network of more than 500,000 farmers and 150,000 suppliers, according to the foods producing company in a news release.
“Nestle is laying out its plans to support and accelerate the transition to a regenerative food system – one that aims to protect and restore the environment, improves the livelihoods of farmers and enhance the well-being of farming communities,” the company expantiated in the release titled: “Nestle unveils plans to support the transition to a regenerative food system.”
It pointed out that as part of the journey, the company will also initiate new programmes to help address the social and economic challenges of the transition.
The announcement was issued in the lead up to the United Nations (UN) Food System Summit in New York, USA.
The Nestle’s plan to support the transition to a regenerative food system is part of its contribution to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by year 2030.
The company also follows the recent report from the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that showed that climate crisis is intensifying.
“We know that regenerative agriculture plays a critical role in improving soil health, restoring water cycles and increasing biodiversity for the long-term,” Paul Bulcke, Chairman of Nestle, said.  “These outcomes form the foundation of sustainable food production and, crucially, also contribute to achieving our ambitious climate change targets.”
Nestle is a signatory of the UN Business Ambition for 1.5 •C pledge, and was one of the first companies to share its detailed, time-bound climate plan in December 2020, the news statement issued by its Corporate Communications Specialist, Bola Audu, pointed out.
The company said that it is taking measures to halve its emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero by year 2050.
