Medical Workers wants Gov Okorocha impeached
By; Victor Duruamaku, Owerri.
Following the allegation of unconstitutional actions against Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, by the medical workers in the state, the workers, through the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria, (AGPMPN) have called the state legislature, to impeach the governor.
Speaking through an official statement issued in Owerri, and signed by the state chairman Dr. Philip Njemanze, the Association also called on President Mohammadu Buhari to declare state of emergency in Imo state following what it described as “unconstitutional actions” by the state governor.
According to the medical workers, the actions of governor Okorocha are in breach of public safety.
The official statement reads, “the grounds for this action is based on the governor’s violation of public safety of Nigerians in accordance with section 305 (2) (C) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.
Further, the statement alleged that the unconstitutional actions of the governor has jeopardized public safety and therefore constitute impeachable offences.
According to the statement, Governor Okorocha, unconstitutionally recently closed all primary and tertiary health centres in the state while threatening to also shut down private hospitals in the state.
The statement said the group saw this move as devastating to the people of the state, pointing out that many people have lost their lives over avoidable medical reasons.
It said “there is now total paralysis of all primary health care services in all the rural communities in the state while in the three major general hospitals and the teaching hospital in the state is no more functioning.
The statement cautioned that, with the present development, there may be rising cases of various diseases, both air borne and water borne in the state.
It would be recalled that most recently, the state government went into concessioning of the management of the general hospitals and some health institutions in the state.
This development however has not gone down well with the people of the state.
