Disturbed by the estimated over 60 per cent of 13 million out of school children from the North, the Emir of Kazaure in Jigawa State, Dr. Najib Hussein Adamu has called for concerted efforts amongst government, stakeholders and donors to arrest the situation.
” Honestly, the figure of 60 per cent of 13 million population of out of school children’s, and that 7.93 of such ratio are girls, is horrible, and disturbing,” he said.
Speaking while receiving members of Jigawa Education Partners on a courtesy visit to his palace in Kazaure, he further explained that the present state of education in Northern Nigeria is the result of out of school children, resulting to poverty, insecurity, and other societal problems in the region and the country.
“People are hesitant to taking their children to school because our education system is in a state of coma,” he said.
The Emir contended that, “over 95 per cent of teachers are not qualified to teach, our learning environment is in shambles, and majority of our schools lack teaching aids.”
He urged government, stakeholders and donors to intensify efforts in addressing the problems.
Earlier the Chairman of Jigawa Education Partners, Malam Tasi’u Abubakar said despite the billions of Naira budgeted for education and the free Girl-Child Education Policy in Jigawa State, there are certain socio-cultural barrier’s hindering girls enrollment in Jigawa State.
In a related development, a Kazaure based cleric, Ustaz Shehu Kazaure has identified poverty and illiteracy among rural parents as contributing factors retarding the development of education especially that of the girl-child.
