Jigawa Vows To Contain Erosion, Flooding, Desert Encroachment

Jigawa State Government has expended over N35m in the last six years to contain the yearly perrenial flooding in riverine areas of Hadejia- Emirate, part of  which was used on embarkment, and the construction of over 35 kilometer drinages as well reclaimed over 4.2 square meters of eroded areas to avert environmental degradation.
Disclosing this at Maigatari on the occasion of flagging-off of this year’s tree planting campaign, Governor Badaru Abubakar stated that the state government has distributed over twelve million  seedlings in the last six years for planting as part of efforts to fight desertification for sustainable clean and healthy environment.
The Governor also said that apart from expending 35 million Naira on the embankment of River Hadejia, it also cleared about 180 kilometers of typa grass in 13 communities within 15 local government areas.

Furthermore he said, more than 23,000  economy cooking stoves were produced and distributed as part of measures to reduce the rampant felling of trees for firewood.

In his welcome address, the Jigawa State Commissioner of Environment, Alhaji Ibrahim Baba Chai Chai  said that the ministry has produced two million different varieties of tree seedlings for onward distribution to various ministries and parastatals, among other public buildings for planting this year as part of measures to control erosion, and desert enchroachnent across the state.

Also speaking, the chairman of Maigatari Local Government Area, Malam Uzairu Nadabo commended the state government for choosing Maigatari for this year’s flag off of the exercise and the launching of this year’s tree planting campaign in the area. 
He called on both workers in the area and the general public to ensure strict compliance to government’s directive in planting at least a tree in their surroundings.
