As women celebrated International Women’s Day, the wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs Olufunso Amosun has reminded women world wide of the need to develop themselves to be relevant in all aspects of human endeavours.
Mrs Amosun said that the time is now when women should belt up in order to march men educationally, politically, economically, socially and in all ramifications .
The wife of the state governor, Dr (Mrs) Olufunso Amosun made the call during the International Women’s Day celebration, organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development at the Valley View Auditorium, Oke-Igbein, Abeokuta.
According to her, women should strive not to play second fiddle, but continually aim higher wherever they find themselves, saying it would be interesting to see women become Governors in Nigeria.
“The theme for this year’s celebration is, ‘’Press for Progress.’’ Just as we have reiterated severally, it is a call for us women to stand up and take charge of our lives, a call for us to strive to do better in whatever field or place we are, to improve on any position we currently occupy”. She said.
Delivering her goodwill message on the occasion, the Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs.) Yetunde Onanuga, represented by her Senior Special Assistant, Mrs. Abiodun Oyedele, noted that women had achieved a lot in Ogun State, but more could still be achieved by looking beyond the present and advancing educationally to be able to fit into better positions.
Also speaking, Senator Iyabo Anisulowo, urged women to be advocates of oppressed women, noting that the recently assented bill on violence against persons was a plus for women to move forward.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Abiola Kufile-Okonji, noted that gender parity did not happen overnight, acknowledging that women were daily making positive impact in the society, adding that the celebration was to commemorate the movement for women’s rights in all facets of human endeavour.
She appreciated the State Governor for giving more women the chance to make their impact felt, with a female Deputy Governor, six female Commissioners among other positions, adding that the law to eliminate domestic and public life violence, prohibits all forms of violence against persons and provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims of such violence and other related matters.
Meanwhile, two people living with disabilities, Mrs. Bola Alli from Sagamu and Mrs Omolola Adenekan from Abeokuta were empowered with kiosks and goods worth N50,000 by Dufil Nigeria Limited at the event.
