A former Special Assistant to former governor Ibrahim Idris and a house member, Elder Friday Sanni has been appointed Director General Special Task Force on illegal smuggling of firearms to Kogi State.

A  statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communications yesterday, said that the appointment was contained in  a letter duly signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Mrs. Folashade Arike Ayoade dated  May 8, 2023.

The letter said that the decision of the State Government to set up the Special Task Force is part of recalibration efforts in the security architecture of the state to ensure that firearms are not illegally smuggled into the state to perpetrate the nefarious activities of criminal elements as Government is committed to ensuring that criminality is reduced to zero level.

Government, the release said  acknowledges the  proliferation of arms in the state and “we cannot afford a situation where firearms are in the hands of people who are neither licensed nor trained to handle them”

The taskforce has also given the opportunity to those already in possession of firearms illegally to submit them voluntarily.
