(NUJ), Lagos State Council and Justice Pen Alliance (JPA), a reputable media outfit appear to be the rave of the moment, as all is set to stage a Patriotic Lecture on February 15, 2022, to eulogise the first Civilian Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, who died on February 11, 2021 at the age of 91. The NUJ disclosed this during a visit to the family of Alhaji Lateef Jakande on Friday in Lagos.
According to Lagos NUJ Chairman, Mr Adeleye Ajayi, we are here to notify the family that we are planning a distinguished patriotic lecture in honour of Alhaji Lateef Jakande.
“The history of Journalism in Nigeria will be incomplete without mentioning Alhaji Lateef Jakande because Journalism was his first constituency.
He was a statesman and a detribalised Nigerian who lived a life of contentment.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director of Justice Pen Alliance, Mr Salmon Salami, said that a major virtue to be learnt from the life of Alhaji Lateef Jakande was humility which was very hard to find among public office holders.
Salami noted that the former governor demonstrated purposeful leadership having touched many lives positively.
According to him, Alhaji Jakande saw politics as a vehicle to deliver service to the masses rather than for personal gains.
In his reaction, Honourable Ayodeji Jakande described the purpose of the visit as a step in the right direction.
“On behalf of our family, I want to sincerely appreciate the honour given to our father.
“May God in his infinite mercies reward you all,” he said.
Other members of the family present at the roundtable discussion were Alhaja Abimbola Jakande (wife of Alhaja Lateef Jakande); Dr. Olanrewaju Khaadijah nee Jakande; and Mrs Oyindamola Jakande.
Others were, Mr Gbemiga Bamidele of Justice Pen Alliance; Mrs Abiola Beckley, Vice Chairman, Lagos NUJ; Mr Isaac Ayodele, Internal Auditor; Mr.Debo Oshundun, SWAN Chairman; and Mr Olayide Awosanya, EX-Officio of NUJ.
‘Baba Kekere’ as he was fondly called was a versatile, and well-bred Journalist.
A man of many parts with an uncommon front.
Hence, showcasing his achievements to the world, one year after his death will clearly rubber-stamp what public offices are meant to be and how they should be run selflessly.
He will be long remembered for his enviable programmes which included free education, free healthcare, infrastructure development and the mass housing project for Nigerians, amongst others.
Top government officials, politicians, captains of Industry and dignitaries will be in attendance in large number during the lecture.
