Brain Drain: Resident Doctors Storm NASS, Seek Reps Support

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has solicited the support of the House of Representatives in addressing the challenges bedeviling the medical profession in Nigeria.

This followed a meeting of the group with the Speaker, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila at the House of Representatives  in Abuja.

While briefing the Speaker, the National President of NARD, Dr. Emeka Innocent Orji said the meeting was informed on the need to further solicit the support of the House in stemming the trend of brain drain in Nigeria, nothing that over 2,000 doctors have left the country in search of better welfare in other countries within the last two years while about 800 left within the last 8 months nothing that the salary structure had been in existence for over 10 years and it is due for a review.

Dr. Orji also pleaded with the leadership of the House to look into the issue of exchange programmes to enable Nigerian doctors acquaint themselves with modern medical equipment in foreign countries. 

The association thereafter, pledged the commitment of the new leadership to continue to partner with the House in order to address the challenges in the medical sector.

Responding, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila commended the association for its efforts in the medical sector despite the paucity of funds.

The Speaker pointed out that the House will look at the 2023 budget for health sector and see how some amendments can be done, adding that the exchange programme will also be looked into and proper advice would be given to the Federal Government in that regards.
