The Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, Umar Mamman Sanda has ordered for a thorough investigation into what he described as the barbaric and dehumanizing act of jungle justice meted to a 22 years old Ambima John by some irate youth in Yelwa, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis.
This followed Tuesday July 27, 2022 intel received from an anonymous person that one Ambima John aged 22 years of Doka, a notorious motorcycle snatcher kingpin, said to have been beaten to coma by an irate mob for attempting to rob a motorcycle.
The scene of the incident, according to the Bauchi state police command public relations officer, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, was visited by patrol team Yelwa Divisional office of the Force where the victim evacuated to ATBU Teaching Hospital Bauchi for treatment, but was later certified dead by a medical Doctor.
While reacting to the ugly incident, the commissioner frowned at the action of the irate youths, who instead of taking the suspect to the police for proper investigation and prosecution, mobbed the arrested suspect for alleged stealing of motorcycle, to death without any recourse to the law.
Sanda described the mob’s act as barbaric and inimical to the law governing the country, warning Bauchi state indigenes that the Command under his stewardship will not tolerate or allow some recalcitrants in the society to take the laws into their hands by killing suspects arrested for an alleged crime in such a dehumanizing and unlawful manner.
He also warned that nobody has the right to treat a suspect in such a barbaric manner, as “It is wrong for anyone to assume the position of a law enforcement agency”.
The commissioner explained that a suspect apprehended in connection with any crime should be mediately handed over to the police or any law enforcement agencies saddled with the responsibility of investigating and prosecuting such a person.
The commissioner of police, the PPRO communicated appealed to the general public to be calm as investigations into the mob action has commenced in earnest to unravel the circumtances behind the killing of the suspect.
