Muslim and Christian communities in Bauchi state have agreed to live together peacefully irrespective of their religious and ethnic differences for the overall development of the state.
The decision for adherents of the two religions to live in harmony with one another was reached Sunday at a round table where issues on how to foster peaceful co-existence among them were thoroughly discussed. It was organized by the state chapter of Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI held at the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi.
The chairman of the General Purpose Committee of the group Alhaji Nuru Adamu Jumba, said in a welcome address that the aim of the forum was to create awareness on the importance of peaceful co- existence by adherents of different faiths in the state.
Alhaji Nuru Adamu Jumba who is the district head of Bauchi, expressed concern on how some religious clerics allowed themselves to be influenced by self-centered politicians who are bent on sowing the seeds of disharmony among people
The Districh head therefore warned that the group will henceforth call such religious scholars to order whenever they digress from the interest of their followers and the society at large.
The chairman of the occasion, retired Brigadier General Ladan Yusuf, has in a remark described the forum as timely in view of the social challenges bedeviling the people.
General Ladan Yusuf who is the Special Adviser to the State Governor on security matters, observed that there was no basis for religious crisis which often causes loss of lives and property.
He also described Bauchi as the most peaceful state in the North East sub-region, and called on the people to join hands together to sustain the peaceful nature of the state.
Three papers were presented at the meeting which all centered on the roles of both Christian and Islamic scholars on promoting peace and unity of the people.
In his paper titled: The Role of Pastors in Fostering Peace, a Christian leader in the state, Reverend John
Ray Maina, called on Pastors to know the happenings around them and refrain from taking side on any matter brought before them
The Clergyman noted that international terrorists groups like ISIS and Boko Haram were established by the western world primarily to create divisions among Muslims and Christians in order to achieve their goals.
Meanwhile, the District Head of Katagum Alhaji Usman Mahmud who was among the three resorce persons at the forum, spoke on the role of traditional rulers towards promoting peace in the society.
Mahmud, who is the Galadima of Katagum, called on emirate councils in the country to establish reconciliatory committees with a view to promoting peace and unity among the people.
At the end of the forum attended by over fifty participants from across the state, a communiqué was presented and adopted by the participants.
