After 90 minutes tension socked soccer clash, the former NPFL champions, Akwa United FC of Uyo recorded a resounding victory at home against Kwara United FC of Ilorin.

Played on Monday at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, the former champions who also go by name, The Promise Keepers, made a leap with three goals down within first 45 minutes.

The three goals were scored by Taiye Muritala, Cyril Olisema and Captain Ubong Friday, thus putting the team back to second position on the log.

But the visiting Kwara Utd who came out stronger in second half made thier lone goal within seven minutes and brought the score board to 3-1 before the final whistle.

Akwa Utd Coach, Deji Ayeni  during a post-match press conference,  expressed joy, saying that the early goals reduced unnecessary pressure on both the players and management.

“I am delighted with our players for interpreting the game plan and making it difficult for Kwara to level up.

“We wanted to get our goal as early as possible and avoid unnecessary pressure on ourselves. The most important thing was the three points. The area of our problem was the goal draught which we have been working on ever since and now the boys are responding well.” Coach Ayeni expressed.

Reacting also Kwara Utd Coach has lauded his boys for holding the ball though suffered goals margin as the final whistle came.

“The first 45 minutes was too tough for us, we brought out the regulars in the second half but unfortunately the goal margin did not change the situation. 1st half was for Akwa United and the second half was for Kwara United.

“The major difference between the team was scoring chances that Akwa United converted whereas Kwara United attempts were blocked or saved by the goalkeeper.” Kwara Utd Coach stated.

Our correspondent who watched the match, observed that The Promise Keepers went into the rescheduled match under pressure from both fans and management who were desperately looking for a resounding victory.

Akwa Utd before meeting Kwara had lost to Plateau United in Jos and drew at home with Nasarawa Utd. The Uyo fans eagerly awaited a good victory especially as a sister team, Dakkada are struggling in the relegation waters.

On the 29th of April 2023, Akwa Utd will play away to Remo Stars FC and the team is hoping to get a draw or win to maintain a point ahead of 3rd place Enyimba.
