There are conflicting numbers of casualties recorded with some saying that about eight persons were killed following an attack on Saturday night by terrorists in Ungwan Wakili, Atyap Chiefdom, Zango Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

A source told New Nigerian that the immediate intervention of security operatives saved the situation and they were able to bring the situation under control.

The source further explained that trouble started on Saturday with a misunderstanding between security operatives and a Fulani man at a check point at Ungwan Wakili that led to the Fulani man being shot alongside one police officer.

According to him, “The situation later escalated in the evening, when a group of youth went for fishing and were attacked as one person was butchered to death by suspected terrorists.”

According to him, the situation has been brought under control with the presence of security personnel in the area.

Meanwhile, a 24-hour curfew has been imposed on four communities by the Zangon Kataf Local Government Council chairman, Francis Sani, with the sole aim of preventing further breakdown of law and order in the area.

A statement by Special Assistant (Media) to the Executive Chairman, Yabo Chris Ephraim on Saturday’s night said, “A 24-hour curfew has been imposed on Ungwan Juju, Mabuhu, Ungwan Wakili and Zangon Urban with immediate effect. This is to allow men of the Nigerian Army to restore peace on that axis.

Confirming the incident on phone to our correspondent, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Muhammed Jalige said that security forces are on top of the situation.

He explained that from the briefing he received from the Area Commander, trouble started a couple of days ago, when a boy rearing cattle was murdered.

“We have been trying to manage the situation while investigating the sad occurrence before trouble broke out,” he said.

On the number of casualties recorded, DSP Jalige said that a joint security team will be combing the bushes in the area Sunday afternoon to search for bodies, if any, as well as apprehend the suspects that were responsible for the killings.

“We are on top of the situation and all the hoodlums responsible would be rounded up,” he assured.

According to him, but for the timely intervention of joint security personnel coordinated by the Area Commander, the terrorists would have had a field day.

“Repelling the hoodlums was a tedious task for our security agencies, but they were successful as the terrorists scampered away from the scene,” he said.
