At least, two herdsmen have been arrested by the police in Lagos  for allegedly killing a bus conductor over the death of a strayed cow.

Identified as Fulani herders, the suspects were said to have stabbed the commercial bus conductor with dagger when one of their cows was knocked down by the LT bus marked FKJ 756 XH.

The driver of the bus was said to be coming on high speed from Mile 2 area, while the two cattle suddenly crossed the expressway.

It was learnt that the incident occurred at about 6.30am on Monday at Age-Mowo area of Badagry expressway.

While the driver was fortunate to have escaped unhurt, the bus conductor who was still in the bus could not run  before he was caught by the herders.

According to reports,  some young men and women gathered to avenge the death of the conductor, blocking the expressway.

The youth who were seeking justice, refused to allow the police to take the remains of the conductor to the mortuary until the arrival of Col. M. A. Abba, the Commanding Officer of 243 Recce-Batallion Barracks.

” The commanding officer appealed to the youth and members of the communities and assured them justice would be done over the killing.

” He thereafter, ordered that the corpse of the conductor be taken and deposited at General Hospital in Badagry for further investigation on the matter”, it was gathered.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Lagos State Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the arrest of the herders in a chat with newsmen.

The Lagos police spokesperson also stated that, ” The cattle herders attacked someone they mistook for the vehicle conductor, resulting to his death .”

He confirmed that angry residents blocked the highway while protesting the killing.

“Meanwhile the two herders have been arrested. Investigations are ongoing. Updates will be provided subsequently,” the police image maker said.
