A Lagos lawmaker has frowned at indecent exposure of diseased parts of the body by sick people as a gambit for begging on the streets of Lagos.
Mr. Segun Olulade, Chairman, Committee on Health Services of the Lagos State House of Assembly made the condemnation while addressing health journalists in the state recently.
“In decent exposure of diseased parts of the body are shown on the roads, and people use those in such conditions for begging,” Olulade observed.
He said that “Nigeria can achieve becoming number one health tourist country in Africa” if only funds allocated to healthcare needs of the people “should be applied accurately to finance health projects.”
He, therefore, charged health beat reporters to emphasize solution reporting in stead of social disorder reporting.
“We have been reporting good things about India that is why people go there.  Report good health developments in Nigeria, not only about bad things.  Let us celebrate those who are doing well,” Olulade  said to the  journalists.
He stressed that rapid improvement in healthcare delivery will be hard to achieve if government alone funds the healthcare sector.  “All over the world,” the lawmaker declared, “ “no government can fund health alone.”
The parliamentarian also highlighted the importance of intensive and extensive consistent reporting on health, saying it creates awareness, adds value to healthy living and saves life.  According to him, “health writers should feel fulfilled reporting on health.”
He also spoke on the dangers of fake drugs, pointing out that it requires collective effort to fight its menace.
“Every fake drug on the street of Lagos is set out to kill somebody and take money from somebody.  Let’s fight it together,” Olulade elaborated.
