A Zamfara-based philanthropist, Alhaji Sanusi Bala Turaki  last  Wednesday,  offered scholarship to 13 students of various tertiary institutions in the state.

The gesture is coming  two weeks to the commencement of first semester examination, while a large number of students of the Federal University Gusau (FUG) are yet to pay school fees for the 2022/2023 academic session.

This is as a result of the current prevailing socio-economic hardship and increase of school fees by the management of the institution.

Turaki, through his foundation, “Maituta Support Organisation (MSO)”, presented registration fees to the 13 beneficiaries in Gusau.

Turaki who was represented by the Chairman of the foundation, Zaharadeen Sarki revealed that the gesture is aimed at supporting  students from less-privileged families.

“The registration fees of the beneficiaries were bankrolled by the philanthropist and we will continue to sustain these gestures until they finish their studies”. He said.

According to him, hundreds of students have also been sponsored under his foundation into various tertiary institutions across the country.

He further pointed out that all the 13 benefiting students were drawn from  less privileged families, who could not afford to pay their school fees due to the economic situation.

“All the beneficiaries are undergoing studies in various courses in the Federal University and Federal College of Education, (Technical), all in Gusau,”  Turaki said.

According to him, others are currently studying at the College of Health Sciences and Technology, Tsafe and Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Talata-Mafara respectively.

Also speaking at the event, the former Chairman, Zamfara Radio and Television Services, Alhaji Sa’idu Maishanu, commended Bala Turaki and officials of the foundation for their support to the beneficiaries.

Maishanu urged political office holders in the state to emulate the philanthropist in supporting the needy.

Abubakar Ibrahim, a 100 level student in Chemistry Department, FUG, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, described the gesture as a welcome development.

“We appreciate this gesture and we promise to concentrate on our studies,’’ he said.
