The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Yobe State University branch is demanding the relevant authorities to salvage the institution from what it called ‘irredeemable path dragged by the interests of few individuals to disregard law and procedures of the institution by interfering with the due process and misappropriate funds meant to settle the backlog welfare of its members”.

The Chairman of the ASUU, Yobe State University branch, Comrade Ahmed Ibrahim while briefing journalists in Damaturu, outlined nine points of deliberate attempt to subvert the University’s autonomy and abuse of due process by some individuals.

Among the demands made by the union, is the “release of 145 million Naira Earn Academic Allowance as they have resolved not to participate in any post-graduate academic activities until backlog are settled.

Other demands include, “illegal occupation of the Registrar’s office by Dr. Kalli Gazali, who continues to sign University’s documents and attend statutory meetings in the name of the Registrar; after his retirement in September, 2023”.

Ibrahim explained also that the office of the Bursar has continued to remain vacant despite the external advertisement for the position in September 2023 and subsequent interview conducted in November, 2023.

The union also raised issues over the scarcity of hostels and cheaper shuttle buses for the students hence forcing the students to miss lectures.  He explained there are only three shuttle buses at one location which are inadequate to the thousands of students who resident in town due to non-availability of accommodation.

The leadership who expressed their displeasure over the unhealthy development, asked the university authority to also implement the 77 million Naira promotion arrears of its members as well as issue appointments to casual and part-time staff who have served the university temporarily in the last 10 to 15 years instead of employment new ones.

The union revealed, it’s working closely with its national body to ensure it protects the University for the greater good governance and would not hesitate to take measures that are of interest to the institution.
