The Governor of Ebonyi State and visitor to Ebonyi State University, Engineer David Nweze Umahi has ordered the enforcement of no work no pay among staff of the university.
Governor Umahi made the call during the foundation laying ceremony for a new Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, Thursday.
Governor Umahi commended the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Chigozie Ogbu for the milestone already achieved in the University.
He decried the situation where some unions in the university are undermining its corporate existence through unnecessary picketing.
“I am aware that we have scored first in a number of indices in the South East and we are also ranking high in the whole country, we are in the top four or five universities in the whole country.
“I want the union of EBSU to know that this Institution belongs to us, the staff are destroying this institution and I am declaring irrevocably no work, no pay, no pleading from anybody.
“Consequences to their disobedience is that I have withheld the monthly one hundred and fifty million Naira, the three hundred million Naira I promised, I have withheld it, they are very selfish people and there is so much selfishness in the university, the university can not grow with selfishness.
“I want the students to rise and defend their rights, they are not doing you no good.”
The governor announced the ceding of the Accident and Emergency Unit and the Lassa Fever Centre earlier donated to the Alex Ekwueme University Teaching Hospital to Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital.
Governor Umahi called on the students to take their studies seriously in order to be useful members of the society on graduation.
“Very proud of you, be committed to your studies, the world is looking for the best brains, cool down and read your books, the world will look for you.” He charged.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Chigozie Ogbu, thanked Governor Umahi for his regular assistance to the university and expressed hope that the latest feat would further improve the fortunes of the Institution.
