Medical Laboratory Scientists have been urged to through consistent research, make new discoveries on diseases and ways of containing them.
The call was made by Dr. Toyosi Raheem from Institute of Medical Research, Lagos in a paper presented at second Annual Scientific Conference held in Kaduna on Tuesday July 26, 2022.
Dr. Raheem revealed that 95 per cent of micro pathogens which he disclosed were responsible for causing diseases have not been explored and discovered, adding that concerted efforts need to be injected into research to uncover new and unknown pandemic causing enzymes for overall safety of the society.
The pathogens specialist explaining further, said that roles of medical science practitioners in crucial in ensuring a healthy society, stating training, access to funds, building human capacity, provision of local leadership among others as keys to improving the technical capabilities of personnel in the field of disease and pest control.
He said vaccines manufacturing and administration are vital areas, noting that governments at all levels need to collaborate with medical laboratory scientists in order to be proactive in fighting pandemics.
Dr. Raheem added that safety, efficacy and efficiency of vaccines should be given top priority in considering suitable ones recommended by health authorities.
Earlier in his keynote address, State Chairman of Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists Of Nigeria, Comrade Taofeeq BabSalam said that the conference was organized to provide a platform for practitioners to exchange ideas on latest scientific discoveries and ways to put them into use for the general good of the Nigerian society.
He urged participants drawn from various lab science related fields to take note and ensure lessons taught are put into practice.
Chairman of the occasion, member of Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Nambol Listick who is a lab scientist, assured participants of advancing their cause through collaboration with federal legislators to sponsor and pass bills aimed at giving more recognition and funding to research.
Listick charged participants to explore ways of disease discovery, management and control, saying it would go a long way of ensuring a healthier and wealthier nation.
