*Greenfield Pro Chancellor says sports is a unifier

The maiden edition of the Kaduna Metropolitan Tertiary Institutions Sports Festival has been flagged of at the Greenfield University City Campus, Kudenda on Thursday, November 3, 2022.

Four institutions, Kaduna State University (KASU), Air Force Institute if Technology, Kaduna Polytechnic and hosts, Greenfield University are the participants of the festival.

In his welcome remarks, Pro Chancellor of Greenfield University, Engr. Simon Nwakacha said that sports plays a key role in every society, which includes conflict resolution and peace building.

“Sports as we all know, builds, states and community development, and even personal healthy life. Sports helps through sporting activities.

“This informed the university to hosting the sports festival. In fact, studies by the United States and 85% of developed countries either use or plan to use sports in national strategies for conflict resolution or peace building.

“In addition, sports builds tolerance, understanding and respect. More so, sports is now considered by
nations and stakeholders as a way of uniting with all coming together for the love of sports,” he said.

According to him, “One important vision of Greenfield University is youth development through sports.

“As we witnessed today and evidenced by the available supporting facilities both in the City Campus and at the Main Campus at Km 37 along Kaduna-Abuja express way.

“Therefore, Kaduna State citizens. particularly students within the metropolis cannot be left out. This is the spirit behind the hosting
of this maiden edition,” he said.

Engineer Nwakacha therefore, on behalf of the students, staff and management of Greenfield University, welcomed all to the Maiden Edition of the Kaduna Metropolitan Tertiary Institutions Sports Festival, which he said, starts on November 3, 2022 at Greenfield University, Kudenda Kaduna.

“From the get go and as enshrined in the school’s vision and mission; Greenfield University is
founded on the quest for excellence, propelled by the need to excel at producing knowledgeable,
talented and enviable graduates who can positively contribute to societal development.

“One of such development is sports, a balance institutions strive to create an environment that promotes academic, physical, technical, social and moral robust system. In view of these. Greenfield University makes great efforts and tends to achieve, as it accepted the hosting rights of the maiden edition of this laudable sporting events, putting action into intentions.

“Greenfield University is a place where students come to develop themselves to become change makers. The university was approved by the federal government in January 2019 and received its Operational License from National University Commission (NUC) on 5 February 2019.

‘The University currently runs three (3) faculties; Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology as well as Faculty of Social and Management Sciences. All of the courses run by the university are approved by NUC and meet national as well as international standards,” he said.

For this maiden edition of the festival, he explained that four institutions, Air Force Institute of Technology. (AFIT). Kaduna State University (KASU), Kaduna Polytechnic (KADPOLY) and the hosts, Greenfield University (GFU), ate competing in six events, football, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, badminton and swimming.

He therefore, used the opportunity to enjoin the participants and officials to compete honourable and go for the mastery, looking forward to the mark of higher performance, with spirit of sportsmanship.

“I also want to appreciate all those who tirelessly, day and night saw to it that this maiden edition becomes a reality.

“I say thank you. To the local organising committee, headed by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Simon Daniel Katung and his team, I say a very big thank you and well-done. To our visitors. I say welcome. Permit me to declare the competition open. Let the show begin. Thank You,” he said.

The three-day sporting fiesta which began on Thursday November 3 at the Greenfield University City Campus. No 2, Umuleri Road, Kudenda, Kaduna, would be ending on Saturday November 5, with a colourful presentation to winners in all categories.
