Unopposed Hon. Elvert Ayanbem representing Ikom 2 State Constituency, had an easy ride to  emerge  the new Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly.

Ayanbem was the only nominee for the position as against the closest contender, Hilary Bisong from Boki 2 State Constituency who was talked into stepping down.

He is from the Central Senatorial district of the state.

Sylvester Agabi, representing Bekwara state constituency, was also elected Deputy Speaker.

The Clerk of the Assembly, Aka Bisong, administered the oath of office to them.

The event was held inside the Assembly Hall and was witnessed by a large crowd.

The newly inaugurated lawmakers, most of the ruling party, All Progressives’ Congress (APC), showed understanding with the party’s zoning formula, which allows the spread of offices over all the constituencies.

Governor Bassey Otu is from the Southern Senatorial district, while his deputy, hails from the Northern district and the Speaker is from the Central.

The list of nominees for commissioners will send to them for screening next week by Governor Bassey Edet Otu, our sources gathered.
