National President of Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), Dr. Nasiru Gawuna has said that the body which clocked 57 recently, has done well in the area of grassroots sports development and needs to be celebrated by all Nigerians even as he commended their sponsors for being with them all these years.
He noted that since it was set up by visionary administrators to ensure sports is developed at the grassroots level as well as enable talented youth achieve their potentials in sports, the federation has surpassed the expectation of its founding fathers and many Nigerians alike.
“Since inception, the federation has achieved many firsts in driving sports at the grassroots; be it football or athletics. It’s record is intimidating and having survived for more than five decades and still waxing strong, is a testimony of quality and visionary leadership
“When you look at YSFON, you’ll discover that through it’s numerous tournaments such as Gen. Muritala Ramat Mohammed (Ramat) Cup which has been running for more than 40 years now, Chief of Naval Staff Cup, Oba of Benin Cup, national President athletics meet, just to mention but a few, the association has been able to produce many talented players for the various national teams. ” In fact it is on record that the bulk of players that represented the country at the maiden U-16 FIFA World Cup in 1985 which later became U-17 tournament were products of YSFON and we will continue forge ahead”, he said.He expressed hope that with more government and corporate support, the body will not only consolidate on its achievement but set more records in grassroots sports development.
