Food Security: Adopt Our Soil Management Techniques, NISS Charges Farmers

The Nigeria Institute of Soil Science (NISS) on Thursday,

charged practicing farmers in Nigeria to adopt its soil management techniques development for profitable farming and sustainable food security in the country
President of the society, Professor Ayoade Ogunkunle gave the charge in Ibadan at the Train – The- Trainer workshop on Management of Problematic soils in South Western Nigeria held at IAR&T, Moor Plantation, Ibadan.
Professor Ogunkunle stressed the need to adopt the soil management techniques was as a result of the reality that the old practice of shifting cultivation ” is becoming extremely difficult due to the rapid population expansion and stiff competition by other land use types.
The NISS President maintained that ” adequate knowledge of the characteristics of the soil is necessary for its sustainable use and management so that soil high quality will continue even under continuous use”.
” Soil scientists have developed various management techniques to ensure that the soil retains its high quality for different crops and crop combinations”, he said.
Professor Ogunkunle added, ” these techniques must be adopted by practicing farmers for profitable farming and sustainable food security”.
” Adequate knowledge of the characteristics of the soil is necessary for its sustainable use and management so that soil high quality will continue even under continuous use. “
The NISS President stressed that the ” meeting is to bring together all the activities of the past few years with farmers in focus, discuss, interact and ensure that the farmers have truly acquired the techniques being passed to them for their profitability and sufficiency in food production”.
Speaking, the NISS Southwest Coordinator, Professor James Adediran disclosed that one of the activities of the society “is to promote soil and fertilizer testing facilities to support farmers on efficient use of fertilizer and provide strategies for sustainable soil management”.
He stated further that NISS ” is not working alone at the headquarters. The institute is functioning through the Zonal offices located in each of the 6 geo – political zones of Nigeria. In order to promote soil management technologies, OCP Africa is collaborating with NISS by disseminating improved agricultural technologies to our farmers through the states ADPs”.
Professor Adediran  then declared that the current workshop “is organized to deliberate on the status of the project and remind the participants on strategies required for sustainable management of problematic soil”.
