Governor Ahmadu Finitiri of Adamawa State has declared curfew following this morning looting of warehouses across the state by hoodlums.
Fintiri said the curfew became necessary due to the dangerous dimension that the activities of hoodlums had assumed
New Nigerian reports that a large number of hoodlums stormed the ware house belonging to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and looted palliatives meant to be distributed to cushion the effect of subsidy removal.
The hoodlums carted away food and non food items some of which include gallons of vegetable oil, bags of rice, water pumps, mattresses etc
Our correspondent reports that there was chaos as security operatives fired teargas and gunshots but that did not deter the intruders.
In a swift action to curtail the spread of the riot and stealing going on, the state governor declared a 24 hours curfew.
A statement issued by Humwashi Wonisikou, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, condemned in totality the activities of the hoodlums.
“The hoodlums have been reportedly attacking people with machetes and breaking into business premises, carting away property.
“The curfew will restrict movement throughout the state, and only those on essential duties with valid identification will be permitted to move around during the period of the curfew.” It said.
Governor Fintiri appealed to citizens and residents of the state to comply with the directive, emphasizing that any person found contravening the order would be arrested and made to face the wrath of the law.
He assured the people of Adamawa of his commitment to ensure their safety and security, urging them to remain calm and law-abiding.
Meanwhile, The Adamawa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 47 persons involved in the activities of stealing food and non food items in the government warehouses.
The Police Public Relations Officer SP Suleiman Ngoruje said the police and other security personnel were doing everything possible to retrieve the items stolen.
He assured the people of Adamawa state that the security agencies will not hesitate to arrest who violates government directives.
The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA has expressed worry over the activities of the hoodlums while appealing to the authorities to provide adequate security to their warehouse.
NEMA appealed to the youth to be calm as the items are meant to be distributed to poor Nigerians in order to cushion the hardships they are facing.
