Confusion As Fire Guts UCH ICT Unit

*CMD assures of safety of lives, property

It was confusion galore on Saturday at the Intensive Care Unit of the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan as the unit was gutted by early morning inferno.

New Nigerian gathered that the fire outbreak resulted in  panic at the hospital and relatives of patients at the unit were gripped with fear over the  incident.

Sources at the hospital said  the fire incident lasted for about 30 minutes, during which staff and relatives of the patients at the hospital were said to be running Helter skelter.

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Professor Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo in a statement issued after the incident allayed the fears of the public over the fire outbreak, saying the fire incident occurred in a section of the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the early hours of Saturday, 19th August, 2023.

” Though the cause of the fire outbreak is yet to be ascertained, there was no casualty as a result of the unfortunate incident. Sll efforts were put in place to ensure that the fire was put out”. 

Professor Otegbayo assured  the public that adequate arrangements have been made to ensure that services were not disrupted both at the ICU and the hospital in general.

The CMD  Prof Otegbayo also

“appreciated the timely intervention of the Oyo State Fire Services, the media for their concern, and the efforts of the staff of the hospital that led to putting the situation under control”. 

He then assured that the immediate and remote causes will be investigated to avert future occurrences of such incidents. A purpose-built fire station for the hospital is also currently under construction”.
