Kaduna State Government has initiated and launched a pilot programme aimed at taking out of school children from streets through compulsory basic education so they could be productive members of the society.
Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Hajiya Rabi Salisu made it known at a meeting of stakeholders held at the community rehabilitation center in the ministry in Kaduna.
According to her, the programme was muted two years ago, scheduled to commence in October 2023.
She added that children between the ages of three and 18 would be taken off the streets with the aim of educating and building their mental capacities for good character, discipline and patriotism for country.
“Children hawking from one corner of the streets to another with no tangible plans for their future will be absorbed by the programme to put them on a pedestal of productive and bright future so they can contribute their quota in making the society a better place for all.
“Almajiris and other categories of vulnerable children from poor homes who could not access quality formal education will also be targeted by the programme.
“We have been holding consultations with relevant stakeholders so that the initiative will be a success and productive.
“Stakeholders have expressed willingness to allow their wards and kids to be enlisted fully in the programme.
“They in particular appreciated and commended the gesture of Governor Uba Sani whom they described as a man with passion for the welfare of the poor and zeal to find a better life for his subjects,” she said.
