The Akwa Ibom State Government has indicated interest to recruit three thousand (3,000) teachers to teach in public primary schools in the state. The move followed the shortfall in the number of teachers due to death and retirement from the service.
A release signed by Elder Ezekiel Umoh, Permanent Secretary, State Universal Basic Education Board, (AKSUBEB) on behalf of the Chairman of the Board, listed three centres in the state for the collection of application forms by suitable applicants.
Last year, the state government began the process of recruiting of Five thousand (5,000) teachers for public secondary schools in the state. However, the recruited teachers were yet to receive appointment letters and postings.
Reasons may be due to bureaucratic bottle-neck or recent paucity of funds accruing to the states from the federation account where most state government found it difficult to pay salaries and allowances of workers as at when due, besides arrears of gratuities and pensions to retired pensioners.
Meanwhile, the state government has restated her resolve to improve education with the provisions of basic facilities and equipment in public schools across the state.
Commissioner for information and strategies, Mr. Charles Udoh stated this while speaking at a thanksgiving service organized by the State council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at Christ Methodist Church, Ikono Diocese, Ikono local government area of the state on Sunday.
According to Mr. Udoh, state government has paid over sixty million Naira (N60m) yearly as fees for students registering for Senior Secondary Certificates Education (SSCE) in the state.
He added that government would continue to cater for manpower development in the state in order to strengthened manpower needs.
