ABUTH Become First Public Hospital To Record  Baby Conceived From IVF

Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika Zaria has become the first public hospital to record  baby conceived from IVF treatment.

Speaking on this development, the team leader of the project, Professor Adebiyi Adesiyun said in the whole North-West, ABUTH is the only hospital that offers IVF services.

Adesiyun added that a male baby was delivered at 10.53am on Tuesday  May 16,  2023, with weight of 3kg 

Meanwhile, IVF services in ABUTH is in partnership with NISA Fertility Centre Kaduna.

He said,  the support of Chief Medical Director, Prof Hamidu Umdagas is immense, which has made the IVF project in ABUTH become a reality. 

“The head of department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Prof Nana Madugu also deserves commendation for her proactive posture in achieving this feet,” he said.

The team leader said, people who want to conceive can now visit ABUTH which is safer and at lower cost compared to the high cost in the private or foreign hospitals.

Professor Adesiyun appealed for funding from the federal government to support the development and the hospital in particular.

He said, funding IVF is very vital because it is the only one  that can solve more than 50 per cent  cases of infertility.

Also speaking, a member of the team, Professor Solomon Avidime said, Reproductive Medicine Unit  of the hospital has enough manpower to attend to the needs of the people who want to conceive.

Avidime said, their main constraint now is funding, especially to build and equip the proposed reproductive centre in ABUTH. 

“There are many people on the waiting list for the service as the next batch of patients are already scheduled to commence treatment,” he informed.

The team of consultants in the IVF unit of ABUTH include, Prof Hajara Umar Sullyman, Prof Nkiruka Ameh, Dr Fadimatu Bakari and a host of other doctors, pharmacists and nurses.
