The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria Chapter has drummed support for the decision of the university’s Senate to increase the students charges for effective and efficient running of the institution.
Comrade Zacchaeus John Maikudi, Chairman Welfare and Price Regulatory Committee of ABU SRC stated this during a press conference held at the SRC Secretariat on Tuesday.
He said the increment varies depending on the course, level, field trips and laboratory training which he said is in the best interest of the students since the university would not want to compromise the quality of training for which it is known.
According to NANS, it is a known fact that ABU Zaria is finding it extremely difficult to foot its bills like monthly electricity of more than N70 million when its yearly overhead cost is just a little over N100 million.
Speaking on the plan by the NANS National President to relocate to Zaria to physically agitate for the charges reduction, he said that it is not necessary as such decision could possibly cause chaos and unnecessary tension in the university.
They also appreciated the concerns expressed by their indefatigable President over the hike in the fees and they believe that the his colleagues are ignorant of the burden of the university and the financial difficulty it is passing through in its day-to-day operations.
