ABU Prof Honoured With NMS, NiCA Fellowship Awards

Prof. Auwal Kasim of Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has been conferred with two professional fellowship awards by the Nigerian Metallurgical Society (NMS) and Nigerian Corrosion Association (NiCA) in recognition of his contributions to the field of engineering. 

A statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria said, Kasim’s nominations for the fellowships were contained in two separate notification letters by the professional engineering bodies. 

The Nigerian Corrosion Association (NiCA) conferred its highly coveted award in the senior professional category on Prof. Kasim at a ceremony held at the Golden Gate Paradise in Lagos on 26th October, 2022, while the Nigerian Metallurgical Society (NMS) honoured him with a fellowship award at an investiture held in Abuja on Friday, 28th October, 2022.

NiCA National President, Engr. Ese Ochoga, described the award as a “professional merit-based recognition”. 

“It is our honour and delight to write to notify you that the Council of the Nigerian Corrosion Association has upheld your nomination, having successfully scaled through the process for the conferment of the highly coveted and prestigious award of the Fellow of the Nigerian Corrosion Association in the senior professional category”, Engr. Ochoga said. 

The president also said that the award is conferred on members who have practiced, researched, innovated, made substantial practical, academic, and various forms of developmental contributions to the field of corrosion science and engineering. 

Equally, the Nigerian Metallurgical Society in its letter of notification to the awardee by its Secretary, Engr. Dr. Oladunni Oyelola Alabi, said that the honour was based on his past achievement and immense contribution to the Nigerian Metallurgical Society and the field of metallurgical and materials engineering.     

Responding to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, congratulated Prof. Kasim, and expressed hope that the honour would spur him to do more in the engineering field and humanity in general. 

Kasim, who is the Vice-President of the Nigerian Corrosion Association (NiCA) and Secretary of NiCA Board of Trustees, is a professor of metallurgical and materials engineering with specialization in corrosion and degradation of materials.
