Comrade Jonathan Asake and Bashir Idris Aliyu, have emerged the gubernatorial candidate and running mate of the Labour Party (LP) in Kaduna State in the 2023 general elections.

In a substitution primary of the governorship primary of the party that took place in Kaduna on Tuesday, the other governorship candidate, Shunom Adinga, stepped down for Comrade Jonathan Asake and the delegates from the 23 local government areas of the party, unanimously endorsed Comrade Asake as the gubernatorial candidate of the party in the 2023 general elections in the state.

The substitution primary means that the electoral act provides that at any given time primaries have taken place which the labour party has done that in the state, that any candidate can decide to withdraw and is not willing to continue, then the party can organise another primary, which the Labour Party has done.

The governorship primary which took place in the presence of a team from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) led by Dahiru Mohammed, Shunom Adinga said he stepped down from his aspiration for the unity and progress of the party, saying that as a family that desires qualitative leadership in Kaduna State, there is the need for party members to rally round each other for the emancipation of the state from the present insecurity, division and other challenges bedeviling the state.

In accepting to lead the party in the governorship election in 2023, Comrade Jonathan Asake noted that the stepping down of the contestant is an indication of the desire to form a government of unity, a government of stepping down personal,  in the interest of the general public, stressing that all that is needed is to have men and women of courageous character that will put their interests below the general interest of the state or country.

He added, “If we have that, we will have good governance, unity among the people. Nobody will be talking about marginalization of tribe, religion, section or region. When leaders come on board and don’t have what to offer, they only come to pursue their individual interests, then, they begin to hide under the cover of religion, tribe or section or region, that is what we don’t want because we want leaders that will come and ensure inclusiveness in governance, show justice to everybody, fairness to everybody and when a leader does that, there will be no problem in the state or country.”

The Labour Party governorship candidate observed that Kaduna state had experienced a lot of destruction of lives and properties, saying that the state needed a leader of courage to immediately do something that would give the people hope of living by embracing all irrespective of any different in the provision of social amenities for the rapid development and restoration of the state to what it was known for.
