Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Most Reverend Mathew Hassan Kukah has blamed the incessant attacks allegedly carried out by Fulani herdsmen on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government’s unpreparedness to tackle the many challenges bedevilling the nation.
Kukah spoke to newsmen in Sokoto during the inauguration and dedication of the new secretariat of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Sokoto State chapter.
According to him, it is uncharitable on the part of government to blame citizens or any particular group for the incessant attacks instead of looking for a way to tackle the challenge.
The clergy said, the primary responsibility of governance is to provide security for its citizens and it is sad that people will come to power unprepared.
He said “I hear people blaming Nigerians, and blaming Fulani herdsmen and blaming.. It is really the failure of government to address the very many problems that this country faces.
“If is a bit of a pity, because it also means that sometimes people come into power not fully prepared, I thought if this government had taken inventory of the nature of the problems that this country face, we will not be where we are today.”
He said the responsibility of government is to fix problem but not to create one and such primary responsibility ought to be carried out by those in government and not to be shifted to citizens or past governments leaders.
The Catholic Bishop pledged the resolve of the church to continue to pray for God intervention, but was quick to call on the nation’s leaders to recognise the urgency it require to fix this challenges and the country going.
Kukah who also expressed concern over the polarized nature of the country, which he said has reduced the nation to a subject ridiculed among the comity of nations.
