The Federal Government has been lauded for not scrapping the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The scheme which commenced several years ago had assisted greatly in moulding and preparing future leaders of this country while serving in their various postings.
These remarks were made by a Batch A team, Mr.Luke Anietie Okon (CR 16A 0904), a computer scientist while x-raying his experience as a Corps member in Calabar with the New Nigerian Online.
According to him, “Those who were agitating for the scrapping of the scheme may not have known its importance to the nation”.
NYSC, he said, had over the years trained and moulded many young men and women while serving in their various states. They had gone through many difficulties thereby preparing themselves for leadership roles.
Okon said “I have learnt so much as a corps member, especially having served  and taught in a school. I had the opportunity of reading and had widened my scope of experience”.
Therefore, I urge the Batch B team to always apply to teach in schools so as to encounter the same experience. It was not easy but I enjoyed teaching, he added.
Okon who is a graduate of Heritage Polytechnic in Ikot Abasi, Uyo, advised the Batch B corps members to always be serious in wherever they were engaged so as to leave a lasting legacy when passing out.
While commending President Muhammadu Buhari on his administration’s policies towards improving the education sector appealed to him to review the monthly allowance being paid to corps members from #19,800 to #39,800 as promised.
This gesture he said will go along way to encourage the sufferings of corps member to offset their immediate needs, especially those posted to difficult and remote terrain within the country.
He said that “As a man of honour and respect I know Mr. President will not hesitate in reviewing the allowance of corps members”.
Though, he said, “I have passed out,  it would gladden my heart to hear and read of the review”.
