As part of nationwide raid and evacuation of unfortified sugar in Nigerian markets, the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), in Yobe State has invaded Geidam market in Yobe State, where a number of unfortified bags of sugar were seized in making sure the consumers get safe products for consumption.
This was disclosed by the State Coordinator, Dr. Zainab Umar while briefing newsmen.
“This effort was out of the directives given by the Director General, Anthony Osita Aboloma to sanitize Nigerian markets of sub-standard sugar”.
“The seized products have been confirmed to be unfortified with vitamin A, however this is in contravention of the requirements of our standard regarding fortification of sugar with vitamin ‘A’ as specified in the NIS for the product which overtime use can cause health hazard especially to women and children” she added.
New Nigerian gathered that the exercise was carried out to encourage local industries and consumers to get value for their money and ensure purchase of products that are safe and fit for consumption.
The State Coordinator therefore called on marketers to desist imports and sales of sub-standard food products in the market and also advised consumers to be vigilant by making sure every product carries the SON symbols.
