President of Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali has expressed great optimism that the nation’s Greco Roman wrestlers will excel at the Africa Championship.
The African championship is scheduled for Egypt from yesterday March 2 to March 7, 2016.
It will be recalled that at the 2015 All Africa Games held in Congo, Emmanuel Nworie won a Gold medal for Nigeria after 23 years.
Igali said Emmanuel Nworie remains the nation’s champion and needs the support of the country.
“Nworie is the shining light in his category; he has been consistent and presently competing at a high level. So he Nworie remains our best chance at the Africa Championship”, Igali said.
On funding wrestlers to the Africa championship, the President said the federation is awaiting the approval of the National Sports Commission.
He added that if adequately funded, the federation will depart with more than three Greco Roman wrestlers.
“Unfortunately, we don’t know how much the federation will have access to in attending the championship. As at now, the federation is yet to know the weight classes that will represent Nigeria. All those listed will depend on the funding we get from the National Sports Commission”, He said.
“It is very possible that you will have one or two wrestlers going. But if we have one wrestler going, it will definitely be Emmanuel Nworie because he is in his top performance in Greco Roman”, concluded Igali.
