World Standards Day: SON vows to create awareness on diversification of Nigeria’s economy

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) would intensify its efforts in the area of public awareness through seminars, workshops, consumer enlightenment activities and the certification of products and systems to fast track diversification of Nigeria’s economy.
SON’s Director-General, Mr. Osita Aboloma stressed this in his message on the World Standards Day, marked all over the world on Friday.
According to a statement signed by his Special Assistant, Fashina R. Adebola, he said that the move would restore confidence of customers on Nigerian products and help create demand for them.
 
“In tune with the efforts of the Federal Government to diversify the nation’s economy, these efforts will focus largely on micro, small, and medium enterprises particularly in the agro and allied sectors,” he added.
He charged stakeholders to partner SON in promoting the quality culture in Nigeria by voluntary implementation of national and international standards in the bid to improving lives through quality products.
Emphasizing the importance of the World Standards Day, he said that the International Organisation for Standardization, (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) while marking the day, posited that by introducing common interpretations on reciprocal sides of a communication or transaction, standards is essential to mutually beneficial trade and resource efficient international commerce.
Mr. Aboloma said that social interaction relies on common respect for fundamental sets of norms, concepts or meanings which international standards codify to ensure that they are accessible to all.
The Director-General said that already, Nigeria has in place marks of quality to guide customers in purchase decisions as well as provide confidence to manufacturers and importers, which he said is in line with the 2016 World Standards Day theme ‘Standards Build Trust’.
